Ford (F) Global Design Chief Moray Callum says two of the big challenges in the future will be integrating new technology into vehicles ‘that’s easy to use and intuitive’ and using materials which are durable but lighter in weight. Callum said, ‘I think integrating technology into interiors is going to be one of our hardest tasks moving forward.’ Some of that technology includes autonomous or self-driving cars which Callum says may need to be designed differently. ‘There will be autonomous cars for people who aren’t really interested in driving and I think there will be autonomous cars for people who are still interested in driving. The challenge will be, how do you design for both…and they will probably be two different types of vehicles.’ Ford’s latest GT is all carbon fiber and Callum said it’s possible that in ten years more mass-produced cars could be made from carbon fiber because ‘light-weighting is very important.’
