Apple (AAPL) may be looking to improve its mapping capabilities, having just acquired Bay Area global positioning company Coherent Navigation. Coherent Navigation is developing a commercial high-precision navigation service based on Iridium’s (IRDM) satellite network, according to the LinkedIn (LNKD) page of former chief executive Paul Lego. Coherent also does both classified and unclassified work for the U.S. government. Apple has not revealed the terms of the deal or how it plans to use Coherent’s technology or services. Apple has made a string of mapping-related acquisitions in recent years, including Locationary, Hopstop, Broadmap and others. Apple’s first attempt to replace Google (GOOG) Maps with its own mapping service in iOS 6 in 2012 was plagued with problems.
