OpenAI Acquires Orchestra Bio to Expand Rosalind Life Sciences Tools – Unite.AI

OpenAI has acquired Orchestra Bio, a company whose platform coordinates drug development work across biopharma teams, and is bringing the startup’s team and technology together with Rosalind, its AI models and tools for life sciences research. OpenAI announced the acquisition on October 20, 2026.

OpenAI said its goal is to help scientists make discoveries and manage the work required to turn those discoveries into treatments that reach patients sooner. Developing a new medicine takes roughly 10 to 15 years on average from target discovery through regulatory approval in the United States, according to the company, and the teams behind those programs must coordinate work across internal departments and external partners, often through disconnected systems. OpenAI describes the present moment as an inflection point at which AI can take on these specialized tasks and complex workflows.

Integration With Rosalind

Rosalind is OpenAI’s life sciences brand. OpenAI describes GPT-Rosalind as a purpose-built model that helps scientists reason through questions in biology and chemistry, and Rosalind Workbench as the layer that connects those capabilities with scientific tools and data so researchers can analyze results and plan experiments. Orchestra adds a team with experience across biotech, software, and AI, along with a platform built to coordinate drug development. OpenAI said that together the organizations aim to build agents that connect scientific findings with the studies, decisions, and next steps needed to advance a potential medicine.

How Orchestra’s Platform Works

Orchestra Bio built its platform around a model in which people and AI agents work together to advance drug programs. Scientists and program leaders hand off the monitoring and tracking of studies and campaigns to agents, which OpenAI says frees them to guide the work, make decisions, and address issues before they cause delays. According to OpenAI, a problem in one part of a drug program can affect many others: a failed manufacturing batch, for example, can delay the start of a clinical trial. Orchestra’s agents pinpoint the activities and timelines a problem touches, pull together the relevant information, and compare response options, and scientists and program leaders can then use that analysis to decide what to do next.

Orchestra Bio confirmed the acquisition on its own website, saying it started the company four years earlier to help biotech and pharma teams advance their drug development programs. The company describes medicine development as involving thousands of decisions and dependencies that run across discovery, preclinical, manufacturing, and clinical work. In its framing, agents can take on planning, orchestration, and analysis, leaving scientists and program leaders to concentrate on the decisions that require their expertise. Orchestra Bio said it is joining OpenAI “to continue our mission at an even greater scale,” and it thanked its customers, investors, and supporters.

Rosalind Access and Reported Benchmarks

Rosalind Workbench is in research preview, with an orchestrated set of scientific tools connected in a single workspace. It offers an Explore mode for general scientific questions, using the latest ChatGPT models available to the user, and a Research mode that applies GPT-Rosalind to more complex biological questions, in-depth analysis, and advanced research workflows, with access through an application process. Researchers can also use GPT-Rosalind inside Codex to connect their scientific tools, data, and evidence into research workflows that teams can review, share, and reuse, while a GPT-Rosalind API targets organizations that want to integrate life sciences reasoning into their own research applications, internal tools, and governed workflows. API access is subject to eligibility review and organizational approval.

OpenAI’s product page reports benchmark results for the model on life sciences research tasks, stated as increases in performance per token: 53.7% on Genebench, 18.0% on Medchem Bench, 19.6% on Labworkbench, and 4.42% on LifeSci Bench. The page lists supported uses that include prioritizing biological targets, engineering proteins, synthesizing evidence across papers and experiments, analyzing unstructured experimental results, and saving workflows that teams can inspect, share, and reuse.

Pharma Partnerships and Access Programs

OpenAI said its partnership with Novo Nordisk is aimed at translating the drugmaker’s scale and scientific expertise into faster R&D and commercial execution while maintaining strong governance, and that at Moderna, AI is helping teams turn insights from complex data into experimental workflows, with the potential to accelerate R&D. In a statement carried on OpenAI’s Rosalind page, Mike Doustdar, Novo Nordisk’s CEO and president, said: “Our partnership with OpenAI will help translate this scale into faster R&D and commercial execution, while maintaining the governance our patients and society expect.”

OpenAI also lists structured access routes beyond enterprise customers. The Rosalind Academic Plan offers eligible labs sponsored access to GPT-Rosalind and tools for life sciences discovery. An enterprise option brings GPT-Rosalind into approved research workflows with governance review and enterprise-grade deployment controls, while government and public-health teams can request reviewed access for research, preparedness, and resilience work under what OpenAI describes as clear public-benefit boundaries. A separate Rosalind Biodefense program supports trusted developers and public-health teams building defensive applications with GPT-Rosalind, with focus areas that include early detection, preparedness, diagnostics, response, and medical countermeasures.

OpenAI said its broader vision is for AI to help scientists across the full process of discovering and developing new medicines, and it described bringing Orchestra Bio together with Rosalind as a step toward that vision.
