Meta Researchers Introduced VR-NeRF: An Advanced End-to-End AI System for High-Fidelity Capture and Rendering of Walkable Spaces in Virtual Reality

With the advent of affordable virtual reality (VR) technology, there has been significant growth in highly immersive visual media such as realistic VR photography and video. Existing approaches generally fall under the following two categories:

  • High-fidelity view synthesis with a small headbox of diameter less than 1 m restricts the user’s movement to a small area.
  • Scene-scale free-viewpoint view synthesis of lower quality or framerate, which allows the users to move freely, but the rendered image quality is lower.

To address the limitations of the existing methods, the authors of this paper have introduced VR-NeRF, a system capable of creating realistic VR experiences where users can walk around and explore real-world spaces. The dataset used by the researchers consists of thousands of 50-megapixel HDR images, with several of the datasets exceeding 100 gigapixels, which enables their system to achieve high-fidelity view synthesis.

In recent times, there has been a significant growth in the popularity of Neural radiance fields (NeRFs) because of their ability to generate high-quality novel-view synthesis. However, the existing NeRF methods do not work well for large, complex scenes. 

The method proposed by the researchers, NeRF, is specifically designed for the high-fidelity dataset they designed, enabling it to support real-time VR rendering in high quality. The multi-camera rig used by the researchers is a one-of-a-kind device that captures numerous uniformly distributed HDR photos of a scene. 

VR-NeRF also consists of a custom GPU renderer that allows high-fidelity rendering into VR. Moreover, the renderer also runs at a consistent frame rate of 36 Hz, resulting in a compelling VR experience. The researchers have extended the instant neural graphics primitives (NGPs) with a few improvements, which allow them to produce images with accurate colors and render images at different levels of detail while optimizing the trade-off between quality and speed.

The researchers also demonstrated the quality of the results on their challenging high-fidelity datasets and compared their method and datasets to existing baselines. They showed that their method was able to produce high-quality VR renderings of walkable spaces with a wide dynamic range.

In conclusion, VR-NeRF is a holistic approach for capturing, reconstructing, and rendering high-fidelity walkable spaces in VR. The method is capable of achieving higher resolution, framerate, and visual fidelity that enable a comprehensive VR experience. The method proposed by the researchers has the potential to address the issues in the already existing VR applications and allow users to experience even large and complex scenes in greater detail.
