David Sampson, CEO of the American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA), joined TheStreet to share his top tips for getting your home hurricane-ready.

CONWAY GITTENS: So hurricane season has already kicked off. How can homeowners best prepare for severe weather?
DAVID SAMPSON: Well, first of all, they need to heed all of the local warnings if there’s an evacuation alert. The most important thing is protecting life that comes before anything but before the storm hits. You know, we always encourage people to make sure that they’ve got a good video inventory of their home in case the worst happens, to make sure that any external materials outside like patio furniture gets taken inside so it doesn’t blow through windows. And, you know, once the hurricane is barreling down on you, other than that, there’s very little that you can do. Most of the work needs to be done well in advance to prepare your homes for severe weather.
CONWAY GITTENS: So talk to me a little bit about that video inventory. What’s the purpose of that?
DAVID SAMPSON: Well, the purpose of that is if the worst happens to expedite the claims handling process, to make sure that you’ve got a good contemporaneous record of the furnishings in the house so that when you call your insurance agent or you call the claims office of your insurance company, you can send that to them. And that will greatly expedite the claims handling process and get you a check and help you to begin to get your life back in order after the storm hits.
