Peter Eriksson, a Swedish lawmaker in the European Parliament representing the Green Party, offers his thoughts on creating a more integrated EU-wide electricity sector, as envisioned in the European Commission’s planned Energy Union. While the EC plans suggests a 10% target for electricity connectivity across the 28-nation bloc, Eriksson suggests having regional targets as well, ‘because then you can focus on the real problems of the bottlenecks in the system … and get more money where it’s needed most.’ Eriksson also advocates a stronger role for the EU’s energy regulatory agency ACER (Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators) and more renewable energy, which he says will help the EU reduce its dependence on Russia. His message to foreign investors about the planned Energy Union? It will lead to lower prices and a more competitive market in Europe.
