Major indexes in the U.S. moved into record territory in midday trading on this last Friday of the year. Oil is in focus following escalating clashes in Libya. Hundreds of civilians have been killed in fighting since August and at least 120,000 people were forced to leave their homes. Libya holds the largest oil reserve in Africa. Libyan officials confirmed a rocket hit the country’s largest port terminal and set an oil storage tank on fire on Thursday. Libya’s crude oil output has been down in the last two months, sparking concerns about production halts on top of the humanitarian crisis. Russian authorities are under scrutiny as the country’s currency reverses ground after five days of modest gains. Despite the Russian government’s stabilization effort, the ruble is down 4% on Friday. The ruble is the worst performing currency in the world this year.
