Air traffic staffing has been cut by 50%

CAROLINE WOODS: Think the government shutdown isn’t impacting you? Think again – especially if you’re traveling.
The FAA says staffing shortages are already causing flight delays at major airports including Newark, Denver, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Burbank.
Here’s why: about 13,000 air traffic controllers and 60,000-plus TSA officers are still required to work through the shutdown – but they’re not getting paid. They’re set to miss their first paycheck on October 14.
Some controllers have already started calling out sick, and the Transportation Secretary says staffing in some areas has been cut by half since the shutdown began last week.
That means longer lines, delayed flights, and more cancellations – and it could get worse.
On Monday alone, more than 4,000 flights were delayed nationwide, including almost a third of arrivals in Denver and about one in five at Newark – according to FlightAware.
Bottom line: air safety isn’t at risk but your travel plans might be.
