Steve Olenick, partner at law firm Loeb & Loeb, talks with Lee Pacchia about how a recent change in NCAA rules will allow student athletes to attend the NBA draft combine without forfeiting their eligibility to play in college. The new rule gives student athletes ten days to remove their name from consideration for the NBA draft and return to playing college basketball. According to Olenick, the change gives student athletes greater flexibility in making a decision rife with economic implications, noting that the difference between a first and second round selection is often a guaranteed two year contract. ‘It lets [student athletes] assess the situation,’ he says. ‘I think the NCAA is looking at this as an opportunity to work with the student athletes so that they’re not just going to enter the NBA draft because they have to,’ he says. As a result, Olenick believes this year’s NBA draft combine could see a greater prospects looking for evaluations from teams than usual.
