The White House could be considering asking utility companies to cut greenhouse gases by as much as 25%. The Obama administration is under pressure to prove to environmentalists that it will keep its promises. The easiest target is utility companies which are responsible for 40% of the carbon emissions. The rules though, would not take effect for years and the bulk of the cuts, if they even occur, wouldn’t be until 2024. Mutual fund investors have been pouring into utility stocks pushing the utility ETF’s higher and higher. For now, the rumor has not been confirmed.
