The government is shut down for the first time since 2018.Roughly 750,000 federal workers could be furloughed without pay, while millions more – from TSA agents to active-duty troops – still have to work, but won’t get a paycheck until it ends.
The cost? About $400 million in lost pay every day.National parks, Smithsonian museums, even food inspections could be disrupted. Contractors like janitors and security guards may never see back pay.
Social Security and Medicare checks will keep going out – but delays in services are likely. And every week this shutdown drags on, it could cost the economy billions.
Bottom line: workers, services, and the economy will all feel it until Congress cuts a deal.
