What makes a great investment or financial account?
There’s no one big benefit or secret hack that makes it useful.
But there are five reasons this account might offer more than you expect:
1. It has a triple tax advantage. You get a tax break when you contribute (up to the annual limit), your contributions can potentially grow without being taxed, and you can use it tax-free for qualified medical expenses.
2. It’s not just for spending on your health. You can invest the funds. Over time, how you invest your contributions may compound and turn into a larger pool you can use for future healthcare costs.
3. It becomes more flexible later in life. After age 65, you can use the contributions in the account for non-medical expenses (the money is taxed like income, though). It makes the account function similarly to a retirement account like a 401(k).
4. It can lower costs now. The account is only available for people with high-deductible health insurance plans, which typically have lower monthly premiums. If you’re spending less monthly on insurance, and if you’ve also got lower medical expenses, you could use any savings to build your account.
5. It’s there in case of the unexpected. Medical costs can show up when you least expect them. This account gives you a dedicated way to pay for those expenses without necessarily dipping into other savings or taking on debt.
This is the health savings account, or HSA. It lets you save your contributions tax-free for medical expenses. And in some cases, you can invest the funds in your account, which may lead to growth over time.
For the right situation, it definitely offers a flexible and tax-efficient structure. But no account is perfect. Understanding how each account works and where it fits in your financial plan is what actually determines what’s best for you.
