It’s the second horror flick to lead the box office this year.
Transcript:
CAROLINE WOODS: Two new movies from opposite ends of the spectrum topped expectations at the weekend box office – a chilling horror and a family comedy.
Coming in at number one – Warner Brothers’ horror flick Weapons. It opened to $42.5 million domestically, marking the second time this year that an original horror film has claimed the top spot.
Right behind it – Disney’s Freakier Friday, starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. The remake debuted to $29 million, reuniting the duo from the 2003 hit.
Last week’s champ, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, surrendered its crown, dropping to third place with $15.5 million in its third weekend.
Critics are raving about Weapons – it boasts a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the best-reviewed film in the top three. Freakier Friday isn’t far behind with a still-fresh 73%.
From horror to heartwarming, the box office had something for everyone this weekend.
