‘Jurassic World’ has bitten off a record breaking $204.6 million at the American movie box office, the second biggest debut of all time. Universal’s dinosaur remake of Spielberg’s original ‘Jurassic Park’ smashed estimates over the weekend. The movie entered the record books as the biggest ever global opener, raking in $511.8 million worldwide. Walt Disney’s comic book adaptation of ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’ is the only movie ever to clock a more lucrative opening weekend in the U.S back in 2012, grossing $207.4 million. The Jurassic Park remake hit the big screen 22 years after the original, directed by newcomer Colin Trevorrow. Ticket sales got an extra boost from around 48 percent of the domestic audience who opted to see the film in 3D, paying the highest tier entry cost. Universal has now overtaken Disney (DIS) and Warner Bros (TWX) in domestic market success this year. With the help of ‘Jurassic World’ the studio has now surpassed $1 billion in ticket sales in the last twelve months. Universal has seen further success in 2015 with blockbuster releases including ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ and ‘Furious 7.’
