United Airlines (UAL) will buy a $30 million stake in biofuel company Fulcrum Bioenergy. The deal could provide United with around 180 million gallons of fuel per year. The biofuel investment has been called as the largest ever by a U.S. airline and will help to hedge against oil price volatility. The biofuel injection will only make up a small percentage of United’s burn rate. The airline used 3.9 billion gallons of fossil fuel last year. It’s an active step by United to reduce its carbon footprint as pressure builds on corporations to limit harmful emissions. United’s agreement with Fulcrum Bioenergy will provide sustainable fuel for a minimum of ten years. It will be the first time the biofuel has been used for domestic passenger flights.
