CAROLINE WOODS: Uber is rolling out a new feature aimed at rider safety — giving women the option to choose women drivers.
The ride-hailing giant is piloting the program in select U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Detroit over the next few weeks. It’s called Women Rider Preference, and it’s designed to help prevent sexual assault on the platform.’
Female passengers will be able to request female drivers and vice versa. Women drivers can also choose to pick up women riders – including during peak hours like evenings.
It’s the first time Uber is offering this feature in the U.S., after launching it in 40 other countries, where the company says feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
But Uber isn’t first. Lyft rolled out a similar option in 2023. And smaller, women-focused rideshare apps like HERide and Just Her Rideshare have been doing this for years.
