Estimates indicate that 45 million Americans will itemize deductions on their tax returns, claiming $1.2 trillion in write-offs. But millions more will take a so-called “standard” deduction and potentially pay more than they have to.
TurboTax estimates that about 90% of taxpayers will now claim the standard deduction instead of itemizing. Last tax season about 70% of taxpayers claimed the standard deduction and about 30% itemized their deductions.
