Unexpected expenses happen. Car repairs. Job loss. Medical bills. That’s why an emergency fund is a key part of having strong finances.

Here are a few things to consider when building yours:

1. Know your expenses.

Understand your monthly costs, including housing, utilities, food, transportation, insurance, debt payments, and any other regular expenses. Then track what you spend on fun like dining out, entertainment, and subscriptions. It’ll show you where your money goes and how much you may be able to save consistently. Find what works best for you: a budgeting app, a spreadsheet, or maybe even just pen and paper.

2. Set a savings goal.

A common rule of thumb for an emergency fund is three to six months’ worth of expenses. If you have kids, an unstable job, or live in an expensive area, you may want to save more. Set a realistic goal based on your situation and create a plan to reach it by a certain date.

3. Decide where to keep it.

Emergency savings should be safe, low risk, and easy to access. Options may include high-yield savings accounts, money market accounts, short-term certificates of deposit (CD), or Treasuries. Research your options and choose what works best for your needs. Keep in mind that rates can change over time.

4. Automate it.

Once you’ve set your savings goal, consider automatic deposits or transfers. Even small, consistent contributions can add up over time. Paying yourself first and spending what’s left is a good habit for long-term wealth creation.

Building an emergency fund may take time, so start where you can and stay consistent. This account is more than a financial cushion—it’s a strategic tool that protects your investments, supports your well-being, and helps you stay on track toward your financial goals.
