Tesla (TSLA) chief executive officer and product architect Elon Musk announced at the company’s annual shareholder meeting on Tuesday that deliveries of the anticipated Model X SUV are expected to begin late in the third quarter of this year. Musk said, ‘We’re expecting to begin our first deliveries in probably about three or four months. And as with the software, I’m looking at the latest iteration of the Model X every week, and it really is, it’s turning out to be a really great car. The Model X may arguably be a better SUV than the Model S is a sedan.’ Production of the Model X has been delayed several times from Tesla’s original plans to begin in 2013. Musk said the company is working on ensuring that features like the Model X’s falcon-wing doors and second-row seats are done properly, but Tesla is in the final stages of getting the vehicle ready for market. As far as pricing, the Model X is expected to cost roughly the same as an equally-equipped Model S. Prices for the Model S sedan start at about $70,000. Musk also announced a software upgrade for the Model S, which will include autopilot driver-assist technology. He said the upgrade may become available to early-access customers by the end of this month. However, Musk warned that the first version of autopilot is designed for the driver to be paying attention to the road and ready to take over should an issue arise. He explained that the feature is intended to work in a similar fashion to how autopilot for an aircraft works by alleviating the driver’s workload and making it easier to drive but still requiring his or her attention. Musk teased that increasing the capabilities of Tesla’s autopilot feature is something the company plans to do, but is years away from bringing to market.
