Taylor Swift’s album, ‘1989’ is now the fastest selling album in over a decade. According to sales numbers from Nielsen music, Swift’s newest pop album hit the $500 million mark in total U.S. sales by its 36th week, which is a feat that hasn’t been accomplished since 2004 when Usher released ‘Confessions’, which reached the $5 million milestone in just nineteen weeks on sale. ‘1989’ is Taylor Swift’s fifth studio album and the third of her albums to reach $5 million in sales behind ‘Fearless’ in 2008 and a self-titled debut in 2006. Swift’s ‘1989’ has also reached some other major milestones for the music industry. After the first week of the album’s release, it was already the second largest selling album in 2014 behind Disney’s soundtrack to their movie, ‘Frozen.’ This all comes in the wake of Taylor Swift’s successful boycott of Apple Music in which she won her and other artists royalties for listener’s streaming their music on Apple Music’s free three month trial period.
