Top U.S. automakers including General Motors (GM), Fiat Chrysler (FCAU) and Ford (F) reported strong retail sales for the month of May. Top U.S. producer General Motors reported a 3 percent increase in sales from the same month last year, on strong results from its Chevrolet and GMC divisions. The company is benefiting from solid demand for its full-size and mid-size pickup trucks. Fiat Chrysler, number three in the market, said May sales rose 4 percent, on strong results from Jeep and Ram pickup trucks. It was the 62nd straight month of year-over-year gains for the automaker. And Ford said retail sales fell 1.3% from a year ago, a smaller decline than analysts had forecast. Ford also announced it will shorten its normal two-week summer shutdown by a week to increase output by as many as 40,000 units.
