Investors seeking diversified retirement portfolios managed by professionals should consider starting with target date funds, said Jerome Clark, portfolio manager for T. Rowe Price. Clark added that target date funds offer a firm foundation for a portfolio while leaving room to add alternative assets around the edges. He said hands-on and hands-off investors have been adopting target date funds in record amounts due to their ease of use. T. Rowe saw $17.7 billion of net flows originated in its target date retirement portfolios in 2014. More than 50% of mutual fund net new flows originated in T. Rowe’s target date funds since 2013.
