It looks like BlackBerry’s much hoped for comeback is not materializing. The smartphone maker’s sales unexpectedly tanked in the latest quarter. BlackBerry did deliver on the bottom line: profit came in at a penny a share when it was widely expected to report a loss. Sales, however, dropped to $793 million, much worse than expectations. Half of the smartphone users in the U.S. used BlackBerry in 2009, but its popularity has been on a one-way decline since then, even among its core customers, the business users. BlackBerry launched the Classic Wednesday, but it’s unclear whether it can rival the iPhone and other smartphones.
