CLINT HENDERSON: So a lot of the higher end credit cards come with trip delay and cancellation insurance. So the first thing I tell consumers is don’t buy that extra coverage. Just make sure you’re booking your travel with a credit card that has those protections, whether it’s an American Express high end card or a Chase high end card. Most of the major banks have higher end travel credit cards that will protect you in the event of a long delay or cancellation. But a lot of the higher end, even the airline cards have protections for consumers. So a lot of the credit cards have protections. You just want to make sure if you’re using that card primarily for your travel, you want to make sure that card does offer some kind of trip delay or cancellation.
If I was booking a $100,000 around the world cruise or something, then I might splurge on travel insurance. But in most cases, your adds protected with the policy that comes with your credit card than you are buying a separate outside policy. For some people, they get it every time they love it. Some people at The Points Guy swear by it, but I don’t ever buy it because I’m booking with a credit card that has some protection built in.
