Sierra on October 20, 2026, announced a partnership with Stripe that lets customers converse with one of its AI agents, pay, and receive a receipt on the same call. Sierra said healthcare payments company Cedar was one of the first companies to take payments over the phone through the integration.
In the announcement, Sierra said payments are taking on a larger role as agents shift from single, support-only conversations toward interactions that can generate revenue. Yet at the moment of purchase, customers are still often handed to another system or sent a payment link, splitting a process the company said should be seamless. Sierra said the partnership removes that friction so the conversation, payment, and receipt stay on a single call.
At the point of payment, the agent shifts into a secure payment mode and the customer keys card details in on the phone keypad. The entry is routed to Stripe, which processes the payment. The agent then returns to the line to confirm the transaction and help with whatever the customer needs next.
Cedar’s Early Deployment
Cedar’s business is helping health systems and physician groups simplify billing and payments for patients. Sierra noted that medical bills can be confusing and stressful, with a single visit sometimes producing separate charges or insurance adjustments. Patients who call about a bill can now have their questions answered and pay within the same conversation.
According to Sierra, 71.3% of calls in which patients begin a payment with Kora, Cedar’s agent, end with a successful payment.
“Medical bills create a moment of real anxiety for patients, and historically, getting a question answered and actually paying the bill have been two separate, disconnected steps,” Cedar Chief Strategy Officer Dugan Winkie said. “Working with Sierra and Stripe, we’ve closed that gap.”
Stripe App Marketplace Listing
Sierra’s platform is now listed in the Stripe App Marketplace, a step the company said lets any business connect its agent to its Stripe account without building a one-off integration. The listing identifies Sierra Technologies, Inc. as the developer, prices the app as free, marks it as visible through the API only, and lists it as working with Payments. The listed feature securely collects customer payment details in conversations with Sierra agents and creates PaymentMethods in Stripe.
Under the listing’s permissions, an installed Sierra app receives read and write access to Payment Methods, which represent a customer’s payment instruments, and read-only access to Accounts. Release notes on the listing show version 0.0.4 on September 10, 2026, which enabled installation directly from Sierra, and version 0.0.6 on September 23, 2026, which let Sierra read account business details to improve the onboarding experience.
An Earlier PCI-Compliant Payments Launch
The partnership extends a payments capability Sierra introduced on April 7, 2026, which the company described as the first Level 1 PCI-compliant payment capability for AI agents across chat and voice. Sierra said at the time that the launch made it the first Level 1 PCI-compliant conversational AI platform and that the capability is verified by the Visa Global Service Provider Registry.
Under that architecture, customers enter card or ACH details by keypad on voice calls or through secure embedded forms in chat. That information travels straight to the payment processor or gateway the business already uses; the agent itself never sees raw card data and receives only non-sensitive items such as payment status and a card’s last four digits. While a payment is being captured, the flow follows a fixed, server-validated prompt sequence rather than model-generated prompts, according to Sierra, which also makes a full Attestation of Compliance and Shared Responsibility Matrix available through the Sierra Trust Center.
Sierra said in April that SiriusXM handles many daily inbound payment calls through its secure voice payment flow, and that a financial services company reached an 85% resolution rate automating card activation over voice.
Personal Agent Protocol
Sierra said payments are one part of a broader collaboration with Stripe that includes work on Personal Agent Protocol, an open standard unveiled October 6, 2026. Meta and Sierra are building the protocol alongside Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe, and Walmart to define how personal agents interact with businesses, and Sierra said the effort includes setting out how payments should work when a personal agent acts on someone’s behalf.
Sessions under the protocol are built on OAuth, an established standard for authorizing access. Sierra said planned payments extensions could let a personal agent complete a purchase without sharing credit card information. Kevin Miller, Stripe’s head of payments, said in the protocol announcement that Stripe is contributing to give businesses a standard way to recognize their customers’ agents, interact with them efficiently, and shape customer relationships.
Sierra said it plans to publish the protocol’s v0.1 specification later in October 2026, host design workshops with interested parties, and publish a reference implementation to help developers get started.
