Just because stocks fell in January does not mean the market will end the year lower, says Liz Ann Sonders, Chief Investment Strategist at Charles Schwab & Co. The so-called “January Barometer” may be fun, but it is not gospel, according to Sonders. As for January’s spike in the VIX, or fear index, Sonders says she expects less volatility in the coming months after a particularly rocky start to the year. Sonders also says that the harsh winter weather has had a severe impact on the economic data released so far this year and real economic activity will pick up when temperatures normalize.
