Putting AI to the Test: An In-depth Evaluation of ChatGPT and Other Large Language Models in Detecting Fake News
ShareShareShareShareShare

With the rise of the internet and social media, propagation of fake news and misinformation has become an alarming issue. Consequently, numerous experiments are underway to tackle this problem. In recent years, Large Language Models (LLMs) have gained significant attention as a potential solution for detecting and classifying such misinformation.

To tackle this emerging issue of fake news and misinformation in this internet-driven world, the researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Stout have carried out extensive research and experimentation. Their study focused on testing the capabilities of the most advanced language model models (LLMs) available to determine the authenticity of news articles and identify fake news or misinformation. They primarily focused on four LLM models: Open AI’s Chat GPT-3.0 and Chat GPT-4.0, Google’s Bard/LaMDA, and Microsoft’s Bing AI.

The researchers thoroughly examined the accuracy of these well-known Large Language Models(LLMs) in detecting fake news. Through rigorous experimentation, they assessed the ability of these advanced LLMs to analyze and evaluate news articles and distinguish between genuine and untrustworthy information.

Their findings aimed to provide valuable insights into how LLMs can contribute to the fight against misinformation, ultimately helping to create a more trustworthy digital landscape. The researchers said that the inspiration for them to work on this paper came from the need to understand the capabilities and limitations of various LLMs in the fight against misinformation. Further, they said that their objective was to rigorously test the proficiency of these models in classifying facts and misinformation, using a controlled simulation and established fact-checking agencies as a benchmark.

To carry out this study, the research team took 100 samples of fact-checked news stories being checked by independent fact-checking agencies and classified them into one of these three: True, False, and Partially True/False, and then the samples were modeled. The objective was to assess the performance of the models in accurately classifying these news items in comparison to the verified facts provided by the independent fact-checking agencies. The researchers analyzed how well the models could correctly classify the appropriate labels to the news stories, aligning them with the factual information provided by those independent fact-checkers.

Through this research, the researchers found out that OpenAI’s GPT-4.0 performed the best. The researchers said that they performed a comparative evaluation of major LLMs in their capacity to differentiate fact from deception, in which OpenAI’s GPT-4.0 outperformed the others.

However, this study emphasized that despite the advancements made by these LLMs, human fact-checkers still outperform them in classifying fake news. The researchers emphasized that although GPT-4.0 showed promising results, there is still room for improvement, and the models present need to be improved to get the maximum accuracy. Further, we can combine them with the work of human agents if they are to be applied to fact-checking.

This suggests that while technology is evolving, the complex task of identifying and verifying misinformation remains challenging and requires human involvement and critical thinking.
