Catalina Island attracts more than one million visitors each year, conveniently located about 25 miles off the California coast. Ecologists are concerned for the island’s ecological future due to the overpopulation of mule deer, which were originally brought to the island for hunting. Conservationists’ plan to shoot the deer from helicopters has some residents concerned about the treatment of the animals and their own safety.
