An Orlando police officer shot and killed a man early Monday morning, according to the department.According to the department, the officer thought that 26-year-old Derek Diaz was reaching for a gun.The shooting happened close to where Jefferson Street meets Orange Avenue just before 2 a.m. on Monday. The chief said Orlando police considers this a hot-spot for gun crime, and they were out looking for anyone who could cause trouble.He said they were investigating a man seen in a car, and they say that man made a move that looked like he was going for a gun. The police chief said that caused an officer to shoot at Diaz.The chief said this started as a drug investigation. “We recovered drugs, and there were drugs that were seen, and that was cause for the officers to stop and get out with the person,” said Orlando police Chief Eric Smith.The chief said Monday morning that in the early part of the investigation, they had not found a gun in the car.FDLE will be in charge of the investigation. According to the department, the officer thought that 26-year-old Derek Diaz was reaching for a gun.
