FreshDirect could be heading towards the block in the not too distant future, according to The Deal’s Sarah Pringle. According to Pringle, the timing may not be far off because of the increasing threats from various players including Ahold USA’s Peapod LLC and Amazon.com Inc’s AmazonFresh LLC business. Closely held FreshDirect, based in Long Island City, is an online order-and-delivery grocer serving primarily the New York City metro area. With additional customers in New Jersey and Connecticut, FreshDirect distinguishes itself via its focus on organic and locally grown food products and meals. Its annual revenue reportedly sits at about $400 million to $500 million.
