It would be a “rare” night at Baltimore’s R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center if they didn’t treat a patient with a gunshot wound, nurse Heidi Halterman says. NBC News’ Gabe Gutierrez takes us inside the facility – the nation’s only freestanding trauma hospital – on a Saturday night. Staff detail their frustration at witnessing America’s worsening gun violence crisis up close, and describe the race to save lives. The hardest part of their job, they say, is having to tell a mother that their son didn’t make it. “It doesn’t get easier,” Dr. Tom Scalea says. “It gets worse.” Scalea says he’s had to have that conversation more times than he wants to remember. “It makes me sad that in the United States of America, this is the best we think we can do,” he says.
