Netflix users cancel accounts amid password sharing ban: ‘The divorce is final’
ShareShareShareShareShare

Netflix may get a resounding “no” to the question: “Are you still watching?”

The streaming service started to roll out its solution to banning password sharing — and users are threatening to cancel their subscriptions.

Users are now being hit with a warning message that reads, “Your Netflix account is for you and the people you live with — your household,” with “household” referring to people using the same Wi-Fi.

Now subscribers who shared accounts either have to transfer their profile to a new membership or add an extra member onto an account for an additional monthly fee of $7.99.

Subscribers of Netflix have taken to social media to express their anger, with many claiming they’re simply going to cancel their accounts.

“The divorce is final. #CancelNetflix,” one person wrote.

“Shame on you @netflix. Isn’t it bad enough the cost of living is sky rocketing? Groceries, rent, gas, etc. Don’t you have enough?” another said.

“Let me process this. Netflix won’t adequately pay their writers and are now charging additional money for a feature they once openly advertised and encouraged. Sounds like corporate greed to me,” one user pointed out, referring to the ongoing writers’ strike.

Many people revealed that they canceled or downgraded their membership because they can no longer share the account with their immediate family members who don’t live at home.

“I’ve been paying for Netflix for 10 + years. Every time they raise the price I continue to pay without question. I have the premium subscription however today my grandkids are no longer able to watch from their home. No thanks Netflix. I’m done,” one person said.

“The ONLY reason I paid for top tier was to share with my out-of-household kids. Now I save (and Netflix loses) $13 downgrading to the basic package and I see many others doing the same. Sound business sense, Netflix,” a parent noted.

“if my household is at college, studying abroad, active military on duty… how tf does this solve anything,” someone questioned.

“I live in a separate house from my teenage kid and I pay for two screens so he can watch it from his home. It’s our least watched platform. I’ll use the $$$ saved for another streaming service. I will NOT pay an extra $8,” another parent declared.

Netflix already lost subscribers in the first half of 2022 due to competition from other streamers, which prompted it to crack down on password sharing.
