CAROLINE WOODS: More than half of Americans say rising grocery prices are stressing them out, according to a new poll from the AP-NORC Center.
Fifty-three percent call food costs a major source of stress, while another 33% say it’s a minor worry. Only 14% say groceries aren’t stressing them at all.
And nearly one in five people struggling with food costs have had to turn to “Buy Now, Pay Later” or other deferred payment plans to cover groceries.
Grocery inflation has eased since peaking at 9.4% in 2022, rising just 2.4% over the past year through June. The latest CPI report, due this week, will give a fresh look at how inflation is impacting Americans now.
But even with the rate of increases slowing, prices are still climbing. Staples like eggs, beef, and orange juice have actually gotten more expensive, due to supply issues and extreme weather. Plus, tariffs are pushing up costs on items like imported fruits, canned goods, coffee, and more.
And it’s not just groceries causing Americans to fret – housing and health care costs are still major stress points for a lot of people, according to the poll.
