With valuations of professional sports teams reaching astronomical highs due to large media deals of major league sports teams, investors with a sports itch that needs to be scratched are looking to smaller deals, and leagues, for ownership opportunities. In Hockey, Peter Karmanos the owner of the Carolina Hurricanes, recently sold one minor league property and is looking to exit another. The Stockton Thunder, an affiliate of the National Hockey League’s New York Islanders is also on the block by Brad Rowbotham. Minor league baseball also has a few teams up for sale, while the National Basketball Association’s Developmental League, which is the least developed minor league system, still has plenty of room for expansion. Investors looking to score a franchise but think they may have been price out of the market, take note.
