Meta Open-Sources Muse Gadget SDKs for DIY AI Hardware Devices – Unite.AI
ShareShareShareShareShare

Meta on October 2, 2026 open-sourced the firmware and device SDKs for building Muse gadgets, do-it-yourself hardware that connects the company’s Muse AI agent to displays, buttons, sensors, and actuators, and introduced the Muse Home Link, a USB-C device that links Muse to a home network, offered free to U.S. Muse subscribers while supplies last.

Nat Friedman announced the release in a post on X, writing, “Announcing Muse Gadgets, an open source ESP32 firmware and Linux sdk so that you can make hardware devices that work with Muse.” He directed builders to grab an API token from the Muse Gadgets page and point a favorite coding agent at the project’s GitHub repository. Friedman said in a July 3, 2025 post that he had started work at Meta that week, describing his job as making AI products that billions of people would love to use.

The Open-Source Device SDKs

The SDKs and firmware live in the facebookincubator/muse-gadget-sdk repository on GitHub, licensed under Apache 2.0 and provided as-is, without warranty. The repository is organized into esp32, linux, and skills directories, and each directory carries a README.md to get builders started plus an AGENTS.md file for coding agents such as Muse Code.

The ESP32 Device SDK connects an off-the-shelf ESP32 board to Muse, with options to add a screen that shows images, audio in and out, or other wired-up sensors. The Linux Device SDK turns a spare Raspberry Pi or Linux box into a Muse gadget, with support for custom commands; the repository’s examples include letting Muse handle sysadmin chores or a Home Assistant setup.

Every gadget needs an SDK token to pair, and the repository instructs builders to review the Gadget SDK Terms before flashing or pairing hardware. ESP32 and Linux gadgets pair with the Muse app on iOS and Android through Settings > Devices after the user turns on Developer mode, and they appear with a “MuseGadget” prefix.

The Apache 2.0 license excludes several enumerated third-party files that keep their upstream licenses: the minimp3 header under CC0-1.0, a pixel font file derived from Adafruit GFX under BSD-2-Clause, ESP-IDF components fetched at build time, and the simulator’s LVGL and SDL libraries under their own licenses. The license does not cover the Jollybot avatar. Meta frames the release as a just-for-fun project built by and for hardware hackers, warning that side effects of tinkering may include bricked boards, voided warranties, brownouts, or bankruptcies and telling builders to proceed at their own risk.

Muse Home Link

Meta also built a gadget of its own. In a post on X, Friedman introduced the Muse Home Link as a small USB-C powered device that connects Muse to a home network so it can talk to smart home devices such as TVs and speakers, along with anything else that exposes HTTPS, including hardware the owner builds with a local HTTP API. “We manufactured a batch of 5000 Home Links which should be ready to ship in a few weeks, and they are free for Muse subscribers while supplies last,” he wrote, adding that all of the Home Link code is open source as well.

According to Meta’s page, community-built skills can let Muse turn on a light, control a TV, or send a document to a printer, depending on the user’s setup. The claim terms state that the Home Link is free with an active Muse subscription in the United States only, limited to one per subscriber, and that units ship in October on a first come, first served basis. Claiming holds a place in line and is not an order; the process uses the claimant’s Muse account, and Meta says it will notify subscribers when the device is available to ship.

Featured Projects and the Builder Community

The Muse Gadgets page lists featured project ideas, most with buy and source links. They include a Raspberry Pi 5 build that gives Muse a way to work with Home Assistant and other popular Linux applications; the Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-AMOLED-1.75C, a round 1.75-inch AMOLED touchscreen with push-to-talk, a speaker and microphone, and a battery; a stick that plugs into a TV’s HDMI port so users can ask Muse to put things on the big screen, listed as coming soon; and the Seeed reTerminal E1002, which gives Muse a color E Ink display that can show a morning briefing, reminders, or a shopping list.

Also listed are the pocket-size M5Stack StickS3, with a color screen showing Muse’s status and a front button; the AiPi Lite, a small desk companion that answers out loud and shows pictures on a color screen when a button is pressed; an ideaspark ESP32 board with a 1.9-inch color display that shows Muse’s status and can draw pictures; and the Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition, with push-to-talk over its speaker and microphone and Muse’s status on an LED ring. Meta notes that the devices shown are made and sold by other companies and that it does not endorse or warrant them.

Builders can share finished projects in the #projects channel of the community Discord with a photo or short video, a line or two about the project, and a GitHub repository with a README. Meta says it may feature shared projects on the page, linked to their repositories so others can build them.
