President Obama nominated Judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court on Wednesday to replace Justice Antonin Scalia, who passed away last month. ‘I’ve selected a nominee who is widely recognized not only as one of America’s sharpest legal minds, but someone who brings to his work a spirit of decency, modesty, integrity, even handedness and excellence,’ Obama said in a press conference. Garland is the Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. His move to the appeals court back in 1997 was approved by the Senate in a 76-23 vote, but his nomination comes at an interesting time, when Obama has just ten months remaining in office. Republicans in the Senate have indicated that they will not confirm any nomination until the next president takes office. TheStreet’s Scott Gamm reports from Wall Street.
