Coast guard spokesman Yoshinori Yanagishima told the Associated Press the pilot of coast guard aircraft MA722 had evacuated and contacted officials, but the other five crew members were unaccounted for and the condition of the aircraft was unknown.
The plane was heading from Sapporo, in northern Japan, to Tokyo, NHK reported. Planes due to land in Haneda Airport were being diverted Tuesday.
The flight was scheduled to land at 5:35 p.m. local time, NHK reported. By 5:50, there was footage of the plane on fire on social media. All runways at Haneda Airport were shut down at 6 p.m., NHK reported.
