EU lawmaker Brian Hayes, a member of the European Parliament’s economic and monetary affairs committee, is confident that Greece will remain the single-currency area and that the bailout package proposed by its single-currency peers will succeed in bringing stability to the situation. ‘Keeping Greece in the euro-zone system and helping Greece with solidarity and support through the EU institutions is really crucial in finding a pathway for sustainable growth to Greece, and that’s what we all want to achieve,’ he said in an interview with The Deal at the European Parliament in Brussels. He said that there’s no reason why austerity shouldn’t work for Greece as it did for his native Ireland, now the fastest-growing euro-zone economy with less than 10% unemployment. As was the case for Ireland, restructuring Greek banks will be a key part of getting economic growth going again, he underscored.
