‘Mockingjay – Part 2,’ the final film in the multi billion dollar Hunger Games franchise topped the box office this weekend but didn’t fly as high as movie industry analysts had been hoping. The Lionsgate (LGF) movie debuted at $101 million in American ticket sales, down 17 percent from the previous installment and falling short of the $120 million analysts had predicted. ‘Mockingjay – Part 2’ also took the international box office number one spot, raking in a further $146 million overseas, but failed to draw new audiences despite being Lionsgate’s widest release to date. The first two movies in the series opened above the $150 million threshold, while the decision to split the final story in the trilogy across two movies has been met with less audience enthusiasm. Lionsgate shares fell on Monday.
