Voyager CEO Dylan Taylor joins TheStreet to explain how his company is keeping up with SpaceX and Blue Origin.
Transcript:
Caroline Woods: We hear a lot more about SpaceX in mainstream media, thanks to Elon Musk and SpaceX and Jeff Bezos and Blue Origin. How does Voyager technologies fit in?
Dylan Taylor: So Space infrastructure. So our tagline is the future belongs to those who build it. So we’re really focused on building infrastructure in space. So our biggest, most high profile project is building a replacement to the International Space Station. That project is called Starlab. We hope to have that in orbit in 2029 and the International Space Station, as you would probably is coming down in 2030. So commercial space stations are a thing, and we need to have ours in orbit prior to the ISS coming down. So that’s one key area. And then as I mentioned earlier, we’re also focused on other parts of the aerospace and defense industry, including, as I mentioned earlier, propulsion technology for smart missile defense systems, software and software enabled hardware.
Caroline Woods: Sticking with Starlab, how big of an opportunity is that and how will it help advance space travel?
Dylan Taylor: So one thing to think about is what the current ISS spend is today. And it’s approximately $5 to $6 billion between NASA, the European Space Agency, the Japanese Space Agency, and Canada. So if you think of that as a cost base that essentially becomes the revenue opportunity for commercial space stations. That does not include, I think we’re now up to roughly 80 countries that have space agencies now. It doesn’t include all that growth. It doesn’t include commercial space opportunities, which might be drug development in microgravity, data centers in space, microchips in space, things like this. So huge growth opportunity there. And we’re very focused on addressing NASA’s immediate needs. But we see demand for multiple space stations over time.
