Each year millions of people around the world count down the last few seconds of December 31st as they watch the iconic New Year’s Eve ball make its descent in New York City’s Times Square. The ball drop is part of a long-standing tradition of ringing in the New Year. But did you know that the Waterford crystal ball is only 12 feet in diameter? It weighs 11,875 pounds (as much as an African elephant) and 17 times more than the first ever version of the ball, which was made from iron and wood in 1907.
