European stocks fall and Asian indices close mixed as China¿s central bank mops up liquidity from the market and as a German index of investor confidence tumbles. Strong first-half results from mining leader BHP Billiton push up its stock and in Hong Kong Brightoil Petroleum¿s shares get a shot in the arm from its $1.1 billion agreement to buy a local unit of Anadarko Petroleum and further its diversification into upstream energy activities .
