Four female pilots with Frontier Airlines have filed discrimination charges against the company, over its lack of accommodations for pregnant and breast feeding women. The American Civil Liberties Union and a law firm filed the charges with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on behalf of the women, who have collectively worked for Frontier for thirty-five years. According the ACLU, the charges assert that Frontier’s policies violate state and federal laws against sex discrimination in employment. ‘We think we have a very strong case,’ said Galen Sherwin, staff attorney with the ACLU. ‘The law is very clear that policies that have a disparate impact on women in the workforce can’t be allowed to fly.’ According to the ACLU, Frontier forces pregnant pilots to take eight to ten weeks of unpaid leave before their due date and fails to provide pilots who return to work accommodations for them to pump breast milk. The complaint alleges three of the women suffered from a breast infection because Frontier’s policies did not permit them to pump on a regular basis.
