Online freelance platforms connect skilled workers with clients who need writing, design, development, marketing, bookkeeping, and dozens of other services. Start there and you get built-in client access, payment protection, and credibility-building reviews without hunting for clients from scratch. The platform takes a cut, but that trade-off works while you build a direct client base.

Subscribe for more tips like this in your inbox daily.

The hardest part of going freelance was never the work. It’s landing the first paying client when you have no portfolio, no testimonials, and nobody ready to vouch for you.

That trust gap is exactly what marketplaces like Upwork and Fiverr close. Clients arrive already intending to hire, the platform holds payment until the work is delivered, and every completed job adds a public review to your profile. You’re borrowing the marketplace’s credibility until you’ve earned your own.

The cut is real. Upwork’s service fee lands around 10% for most freelancers, and Fiverr keeps a flat 20% of every order. Weigh that against the unpaid hours client hunting eats and the math still favors starting on a platform.

Match the platform to how you want to sell. Upwork works like a job board. Clients post projects and freelancers submit proposals, a fit for writers, developers, marketers, and bookkeepers who want ongoing contracts. Fiverr flips the model. You list a fixed-scope service at a set price and buyers come to you, which favors quick-turnaround work like logo design, editing, or voiceovers.

Wherever you land, build the profile around one specific service instead of a generalist menu. A specific pitch like “email sequences for ecommerce brands” gets hired where “content writer” gets scrolled past. Price slightly under market until your first five reviews arrive, then raise rates as your rating compounds.

Treat the marketplace as a launchpad, not a destination. Every review is an asset that justifies higher rates, and every happy client is a future referral for the day you go direct.
