The basic materials sector is made up of companies involved in: metals and mining; chemicals; construction materials; forest, wood and paper products; and containers and packaging products. Steel is also a sub-industry of the materials sector. Currently, the oversupply of steel does not bode well for materials companies involved in iron ore mining. The commodities markets are sliding on China’s stock market mini-crash and the problems in the Eurozone, with serious repercussions on the demand for metals and oil by industrial users and traders.
