The Sundance Film Festival gets underway as movie executives, screen stars and wannabes of all stripes descend Park City, Utah for 10 days to view the latest and most anticipated independently produced movies from both the U.S. and abroad. This year’s festival takes place at a time when Hollywood studios are buying fewer independent films, putting pressure on directors and producers to land VOD deals to offset declining box-office sales. The dynamics of the independent film business may be changing, but the festival’s organizers say the gathering remains much as it’s always been: to celebrate excellent cinema.
