The Food and Drug Administration is recalling 16 brands of cinnamon that contain elevated lead levels, which over time can cause neurological problems including learning disabilities in young children.

Contaminated products were distributed to grocery stores and other retailers across the country, including Dollar Tree and Save-a-Lot stores, the feds stated.

US food safety regulators are urging consumers to check their cabinets, since ground cinnamon has a long shelf life, and toss the tainted products.

The recall – which was initially issued in July 2024 – was updated this month to include four new ground cinnamon products from HAETAE, Roshni, Durra and Wise Wife brands.

Total list of brands with recalled ground cinnamon:

  • HAETAE
  • Roshni
  • Durra
  • Wise Wife
  • Jiva Organics
  • Super Brand
  • Asli
  • El Chilar
  • Marcum
  • SWAD
  • Supreme Tradition
  • Compania Indillor Orientale
  • ALB Flavor
  • Shahzada
  • Spice Class
  • La Frontera

There have been four updates tacking on new products to the recall since last July, as the FDA continues to review cinnamon samples from state partners who have been continuously testing for elevated levels of lead.

Repeated consumption could lead to elevated levels of lead in the blood.

Along with learning disabilities, affected young children can experience behavioral issues and lowered IQ, according to the FDA.

While ground cinnamon might not be directly marketed to young children, it is often used as an ingredient in many foods that kids eat, the regulatory agency noted.

Consumers who think they or their children may have been exposed to elevated levels of lead should talk to a healthcare provider.

Most people experience no obvious immediate symptoms of lead exposure.
