2014 has been a big year for activist investors, and it looks like we’ll close out the year with a bang. Not one, but two activist-facilitated transactions were announced early Monday. PetSmart is selling itself to BC Partners, after a long haul with Jana Partners convinced the pet retail products company that it’s time to go private at a premium. And Riverbed Technology was approached by an activist that tried to buy the company for $21 a share earlier this year — only to see the San Francisco tech firm sell itself to private equity instead. With PE dry powder stacked up, the new year may have more deals like this.
