Jane Chu, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, spoke at the Aspen Ideas Festival about the power of the arts and the role art plays in society. ‘I love the fact that we are moving away from that paradigm that the arts are off by themselves in a silo, or off in a corner, or they’re elitist or that only some people participate while others don’t,’ said Chu, who added that the arts can help equalize the playing field. Chu said the arts have been transformational for at-risk youth, who she said benefit academically when arts are added to a school curriculum. Chu also spoke about the healing power of arts, and an Endowment program that connects healing arts with military service members suffering from psychological health conditions. Chu added the arts have created jobs, and represent 4.3% of total GDP in the U.S.
