European stocks struggled for direction on Wednesday amid a drop in German business confidence and another round of Greek crisis huddles in Brussels. Ahold rose in Amsterdam as the Dutch owner of Stop & Stop and Giant Food Stores in the U.S. agreed to buy Belgium’s Delhaize in an all-share deal creating a new grocery giant with more than $60 billion in annual sales. Bouygues fell in Paris after rejecting Patrick Drahi’s bid for its telecoms unit, while Julius Baer rose on plans to take a $350 million provision to settle a case with the U.S. Department of Justice. Specialty chemicals maker Elementis slumped in London after giving a gloomy outlook for 2015.
